THE YEAR IN BUSINESS

Chamber CEO looks ahead to 2024 after busy year in P.A.

Dec 31, 2023 | 8:00 AM

It was a busy year for businesses in Prince Albert as they navigated several issues including high inflation, rising cost of living, and labour market shortages.

Despite all this, there is plenty of room for optimism as the Prince Albert Chamber of Commerce moves ahead to 2024.

The year started with the presentation of the Chamber of Commerce Legacy Award which was given to Don Moriarty.

Moriarty retired in 2022 as Manager of River Park Funeral Home. He successfully managed McKenzie’s Funeral Home before selling that business in 1996.

In April, the annual Samuel McLeod Business Awards were handed out recognizing the best in the local business world.

WillowGrove Pharmacy was awarded Business of the Year with other big winners including Mont. St. Joseph, Phantom Light Distillery, Athabasca Basin Development, and Mann-Northway.

CEO of the Chamber Patty Hughes spoke to paNOW about 2023 and some of the issues they hope to tackle in the coming months.

She said that every year around this time, they send out a business outlook survey to get an idea of what is important to its members and what they should be looking forward to.

“One of the things last year that we made some progress with is working with the provincial government in regard to mental health and addictions and how that is affecting the doorsteps of our businesses and the things that they deal with,” Hughes noted.

The challenges affecting the labour market such as bringing on employees is another topic the chamber is looking to address in 2024. That, on top of how rising inflation affects local businesses and how that trickles down to the consumer.

Looking ahead to the new year, Hughes said there is a lot to be excited about in 2024.

“I think we’ll have some cool announcements coming up in the new year here. I can’t say anything about it, but we’ve been looking forward to working towards some other great things that will really support our business community and I think it’ll be great for our community as well.”
