Chair of PAGC Women’s Commission, Shirley Henderson, passes away

She is being remembered as a pillar of strength and service to many communities.

Shirley Henderson, the Chair of the Prince Albert Grand Council (PAGC) Women’s Commission passed away on Friday (Dec 29).

In a release, the PAGC said that Henderson’s legacy is “a tapestry of her achievements, woven with the love and respect she garnered from those she served.”

“The impact of a life well-lived is measured not in days or years, but in the enduring change it brings to the world. Shirley Henderson changed our world for the better, and we are all the richer for it,” said Grand Chief Brian Hardlotte.

As Chair if the Women’s Commission, Henderson helped oversee the PAGC Day Care and was involved with board of the Northern Lights Community Development Corporation.

She also addressed critical issues such as MMIWG2, Every Child Matters, Truth and Reconciliation, and provided support to the homeless and Ukrainian refugees.

Aside from her work with the PAGC, Henderson was a proud member of the Montreal Lake Cree Nation, and served as a band councillor, director of health, and volunteer.

Her dedication to health and education shone through in her support for the construction of the First Nation’s new health centre, the women’s safe shelter and the Allan Bird Memorial School, as well as initiating events like the MLCN’s annual fish derby, Molanosa Cultural Days, winter festival, sports day, and the Saskatchewan Summer Games.

Her wake will take place on Jan. 1 at 7 pm at the Senator Allan Bird Memorial Gym, Montreal Lake Cree Nation. A funeral is scheduled for JAn. 2, at 11 am in Montreal Lake Cree Nation, followed by the burial in Molanosa.

Her Celebration of Life is to take place on her birthday on June 1st, 2024.

Shirley is survived by her husband PAGC Senator Noland Henderson, with whom she celebrated a golden anniversary, her children Dean (April) and Raina, her grandchildren Kiana and Rayla.
