Christmas time turned out to be a busy one for members of the Prince Albert Fire Department.

The department responded to nearly 20 calls for service on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, with seven reported on Dec. 25 and 12 reported on Dec. 24. This included a couple of false alarms, a porch fire, cooking incidents, house fires, and fireworks complaints.

On Dec. 24, a fire was discovered in a single-family home in the 200 block of 6th Street East. Firefighters extinguished the blaze and confirmed no one was home at the time. Crews remained on the scene for several hours extinguishing hot spots. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.

Another structure fire happened that night in the Driftwood trailer court. The fire department said that a cooking fire started and spread above the stove. Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire. No injuries were reported.

Firefighters were also called to the South Hill Mall area for reports of a fire outside early on Dec. 24. It was later discovered that pallets piled against the emergency exit doors at the rear of the mall were on fire. The fire was put out and parts of the brick exterior and steel doors suffered heat and smoke damage.
