Mintos fall to Flames in opening game of Circle K Classic

Dec 27, 2023 | 5:00 PM

A gutsy comeback came up just short as the Prince Albert Mintos fell in their opening game of the 2023 Circle K Classic in Calgary.

The Calgary NW Flames netted an empty net goal to secure a 6-4 victory at the 7 Chiefs Sportsplex.

Carson Cull had the opening goal for the Flames 7:30 into the first period while Owen Folstrom made it 2-0 at 11:37.

The Mintos’ first goal game early in the first period on the power play off the stick of Teigan Semchyshen with Carter Bergen and Owen Nelson getting the assists.

The Flames would score the next two goals before the Mintos got another goal from Owen Nelson. Simon Garchinski and Semchyshen assisted on that goal.

After the Flames made it 5-2, the Mintos started staging a comeback with Owen Dyck getting his first goal of the tournament at the 15:50 mark of the third period.

About 20 seconds later, Taite Donkin would make it 5-4 thanks to helpers from Nelson and Kale Margolis.

That’s as close as the Mintos would get as Folstrom scored his second of the game on an empty net to secure the 6-4 win.

Brady Holtvogt was in net for the Mintos making 18 saves while Brett O’Hallorn had 28 saves for the Flames.

The Mintos are right back at it on Thursday night as they face OHA Penticton. Puck drop is set for 7:15 p.m. CT.
