One dead, RCMP officer injured after incident on Red Earth Cree Nation; SIRT investigating

One man has died and an RCMP officer was injured after an incident on the Red Earth Cree Nation.

At around 3:40 Tuesday morning, Carrot River RCMP were called to the community for reports of a gun being fired.

Police found and apprehended two people allegedly involved and attempted to arrest a third suspect, a 25-year-old man.

Eventually the man opened fire at RCMP vehicles and a an exchange of gunfire ensued.

The suspect and an RCMP member sustained injuries as a result.

The man was later declared deceased by paramedics while the officer suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

The identity of the deceased has not been released. No charges have been laid at this time against the two people arrested earlier.

As required by The Police Act, 1990, RCMP informed the Saskatchewan Serious Incident Response Team who is now investigating the RCMP’s interaction with the deceased and the circumstances of his death.
