Celebrating diversity

Prince Albert artist showcases local youth diversity

Dec 14, 2023 | 7:01 AM

Prince Albert’s Shannon Parenteau describes her latest venture as celebrating diversity.

Over 40 local children and youth were photographed for Parenteau’s passion project and will be featured at a special exhibit early next year.

Noting how she put a call out to the entire community, Parenteau told paNOW she photographed youth from various cultural backgrounds and gender identities, as well as youth with unique birthmarks.

“I want them to love themselves for exactly who they are and not how they are told to be,” she said.

“I feel like society has created this box of this perfect child when there’s no such thing.”

The exhibit at the John Hicks Gallery opens on Feb. 1 and will be free to attend.

A special kick-off gala is planned for the Art Hauser Centre’s Ches Leach lounge on Jan 27, and the children photographed will be in attendance. Tickets are available through this link.

Reflecting on her initial plans just to post the picture to her personal social media page, Parenteau explained that while sitting at a concert the idea came to her to do something more.

“I want them to feel how incredible they are,” she said.

Proceeds raised from the gala ticket sales will help cover costs and the remaining amount will go to a charity selected by those who attend.
