Dog shot by police after attacking, biting officer during arrest in P.A.

Dec 8, 2023 | 11:06 AM

A Prince Albert Police officer was treated for dog bites on Thursday night after being attacked during an arrest.

At around 10:15 p.m., police were called to a home in the 1100 Block of Knox Place for reports of a fire within the home.

Following the call, police received a tip that the man who allegedly started the fire was walking on Branion Drive. Officers made contact with the man and when they tried to take him into custody, a large dog charged at one of the officers and tried to bite him. The officer was able to fend off the attack before it charged a second time, biting him on the upper leg.

The dog then released the bite and charged a third time. The officer then pulled out his police-issued pistol and shot the dog once in the leg, causing it to retreat.

The dog was secured by other officers at the scene who then released the dog to its owner for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

As a result of the initial call, a 29-year-old suspect was taken into custody and was not harmed during the incident. The officer received treatment at Victoria Hospital and was released.

Police continue to investigate the incident and the use of the firearm will be reviewed as per policy.
