WARM MEAL ON A RAINY DAY

P.A. non-profit provides food and clothing to less fortunate

Despite the freezing rain and icy and wet sidewalks, workers and volunteers with the Learning Disability of Saskatchewan helped those less fortunate in downtown Prince Albert.

The organization once again hosted an event that gave the homeless free breakfast, clothes and supplies at its location on Central Avenue.

The idea for the initiative started last year when a student with the LDAS suggested helping the homeless, especially during the cold winter.

“This year we applied for the grant through Sask. Energy shared the warmth, got the money and then organized it from there,” said Macaylah Kennedy, a Social Work practicum student at LDAS.

Kennedy said they approached different non-profits in the area such as the YWCA, Stepping Stones Shelter and the Indian Metis Friendship Centre to spread the word that the event was happening.

She added the response in the morning was great as hundreds came by.

“We have about 400 pancakes and maybe just over 200 sausages,” she said. “It’s been really good, and last year we got just about 200 people, so, hoping to repeat that again this year.”

The LDAS also had support from Sask Polytech which cooked the breakfast for the event and Prairie Meats which provided a discount for the food.

The LDAS has existed since the 1970s and offers services like tutoring, and employability coaching educational programs.
