LIGHT UP THE TREE

Christmas tree lighting coming to downtown P.A.

Imagine seeing 8,000 lights illuminate a Christmas tree in downtown Prince Albert.

That won’t come from any Christmas movie but instead will take place at Memorial Square in front of city hall on Tuesday night.

The Prince Albert Downtown Business Improvement District (PADBID) and Beau Lac Funeral Homes are hosting a Tree Lighting ceremony from 6-8 p.m.

According to executive director of PADBID Rhonda Trusty, it’s been a long time since an event like this has happened in P.A. and is excited to bring some life to downtown.

“It’s always a positive and it just seemed like the perfect fit to be able to work with Councillor Kilmer and Beau Lac Funeral Homes.,” she said.

Aside from the tree lighting, which is scheduled for 7 p.m., free sleigh rides will be offered and carols will be sung by the Prince Albert Children’s Choir.

Members of the community are also coming together to volunteer their time including many Ukrainian newcomers who will hand out hot chocolate.

Some of the local hockey teams are also helping out.

“Prince Albert Raiders, Prince Albert Mintos, Prince Albert Timberjaks and the Mann-Northway Northern Bears will be in attendance,” said Trusty. “They will be handing out song sheets (and) the song sheets will of course have the various songs that we will be singing but on the flip side, it will also have their hockey schedules.”

Unfortunately, Santa Claus is unable to visit this event but Trusty hinted that another special guest could be in attendance.

Overall, Trusty is ecstatic that another event is making its way downtown and hopes families in the community will take advantage.

“I think it’s just wonderful that we have another event happening in the downtown that is family-related and I encourage everyone to come on out and have some fun.”
