Save on Foods in Prince Albert is hosting a food drive on Thursday to help families in need heading into the holiday season.

Kim Scruby, the executive director of the Prince Albert Food Bank, said the need for food donations has risen over the years.

“When I started here about six years ago, we did about 700-750 hampers a month and recently we did just short of 1,300 in one month. That works out to about 3,500 people.”

Scruby added that Christmas is always a busy time for the food bank.

“We get a lot of support from the community and that’s what keeps us going through out the year, but Christmas naturally is actually a busier time of year.”

Thursday’s food drive runs from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Santa Claus will be there from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Scruby said the food bank encourages non-perishable food items, particularly rice and pasta.

People can also donate cash and get a tax receipt, or they can stop by the Prince Albert Food Bank office downtown to donate. Online donations are also an option for people.
