This November one of the warmest in P.A. history

Nov 28, 2023 | 5:00 PM

It’s been a warm November for many communities across central Saskatchewan.

This includes Prince Albert which has seen an average temperature of -2.8 C throughout the month. This is over four degrees warmer than the 139-year average for the area. This is also Prince Albert’s 20th warmest November on record.

The last couple of weeks have been warmer than the average as most days have seen temperatures creep above zero.

Terri Lang, a meteorologist with Environment and Climate Change Canada, told paNOW that having plus temperatures in late November and early December isn’t that rare.

“It’s not a surprising statistic just because you can get a system ripple through, and you’ll get a plus one or plus two (temperature) and the next day will be – 35 or something like that.”

There are multiple reasons why it’s warmer than usual. This includes El Niño conditions hitting Western Canada which tend to see warmer temperatures and less precipitation than normal.

Throughout the month, P.A. has received around 8.2 mm of precipitation. This includes rain and snow. The average for November is 16.6 mm.

The last time the area went into December with little to no snow on the ground was back in 2009.

Lang added lack of precipitation has been welcomed by many people, including herself, but it’s important we get some moving forward. This is because of the dry spring, summer, and start to fall we’ve had this year.

“We need the precipitation for the farmers and the forests; that lack of precipitation is worrisome,” she said.

At this time, there’s very little precipitation forecasted over the next two weeks.
