Prairie Oat Growers Association (POGA) meets in Winnipeg next week for its annual conference.

Canada is a major supplier of oats with key export markets located in the U.S., Mexico, and Japan with Saskatchewan typically producing more than 50 per cent of Canadian oats each year.

Some of the presentations will include side banding versus midrow banding, the health benefits of oats, and analyst Randy Strychar will discuss the markets.

Registration for the Dec. 6 event closes tomorrow.

A measure introduced by the former Progressive Conservative government in Manitoba to help agricultural producers is being expanded by the governing NDP.

A temporary rent reduction for Crown land used for things like grazing, haying and annual cropping had been slated to be 50 per cent this year, 33 per cent next and 15 per cent in 2025.

The NDP said next year’s rate will be going up to 55 per cent.

Premier Wab Kinew said the move will essentially keep next year’s rate the same as it is now and will provide producers with more than $2 million in support.

Jenn Pfenning will return as president of the National Farmers Union (NFU).

The recent NFU conference also saw Cady Foreman of Ontario elected to serve as women’s president while Saskatchewan’s Julie Maxwell will be youth president.

NFU also thanked Jessie MacInnis, past youth president, and Stewart Wells, second vice-president, for their service and leadership as they step down from their official positions.
