Northern Bears split weekend in Weyburn

Nov 19, 2023 | 5:08 PM

The Mann-Northway Northern Bears managed to add another check in the win column following the club’s pair of games in Weyburn against the Gold Wings.

Game 1 was on Saturday and saw the Bears fall 2-1, before avenging themselves Sunday with a 3-1 victory.

P.A. grabbed the lead in the first period Saturday when Addison Davidge connected with Julia Cey to put the Bears on the board.

The lamp remained dark through the second and into the third before Weyburn managed to break the deadlock. Julia Durr cashed in with just under 14 minutes to play before a few minutes later, Kiah Shields would do the same for the Gold Wings to give them the lead. The defence stood tall for Weyburn as they hung on for the win.

Annika Neufeldt was in goal and made 36 stops for the Bears, while Hailey Sibbald collected the win with 27 saves.

COMPLETE BOX SCORE (Saturday)

The party began in a similar way during Sunday’s game, but this time the Wings broke the ice first. Durr potted her second of the weekend off a feed from Nola Exner to put Weyburn up early.

Fast forward to the second and the Bears would knot it back up with Mikiya Anderson scoring the unassisted marker. The ball kept rolling for Prince Albert into the third when Anderson potted her second of the game to put the Bears on top just ten seconds into the frame. With less than four to play in the game, Ella Clarke put the final nail in the coffin with Anderson collecting an assist on the play for her third point while Cey also picked up her second helper of the contest.

Nikita Krayetski was between the pipes for the Bears and 40 stops for her first career win, while Amy Swayze took the loss for Weyburn making 44 saves.

COMPLETE BOX SCORE (Sunday)

The Bears remain on the road next weekend as Prince Albert will visit the Wildcats in Swift Current on Saturday before matching up with the Rebels in Regina on Sunday.
