Budget Meetings

City of P.A. looking at increased budget for 2024

Nov 15, 2023 | 5:00 PM

Budget season is officially back for the City of Prince Albert.

P.A.’s council’s first meeting will happen on Thursday with a total of five days being set aside throughout the rest of the month. Depending on how fast they get through all the numbers, they may not need all five days.

As of right now, the city is projecting over $82 million in revenue for 2024 which would be an increase from the roughly $76 million in 2023. The main reason for the jump is a rise in taxation as the city is expecting to receive $4.5 million more this year than last year.

The projected funding is for the city’s general fund which covers most of the budgeted costs. There are four other funds: airport, sanitation, land, and water and sewer utility.

Alongside the increase in revenue is a rise in costs. Currently, P.A. is looking at over $77 million in expenses which is up from the roughly $71 million this year.

A big reason for the projected increase is the Prince Albert Police Service which is asking for an additional $1.5 million.

The police service was provided over $18 million for 2023 but have asked for nearly $19.9 million for next year. This is due to an increase in salaries, contracted work, and materials.

The difference between the projected revenue is about $5.1 million. This means the city could add to the budget without the risk of dealing with a deficit, however, council in recent years has been more focused on cutting as many costs as possible.

Thursday’s meeting gets underway at 8 a.m. in the council chambers. The next two meetings are slated for Friday and Saturday.
