Crusaders and Marauders win big at high school volleyball regionals

After a wild weekend of action, Prince Albert’s senior boys and girls high school volleyball teams have claimed their ride to the provincial tournament.

St. Mary and Carlton High School finished in the top three of their respective regional tournaments last weekend to advance to provincials on their home court.

The 5A Senior Girls team from St. Mary went undefeated in their bracket at 4-0. They beat Carlton two sets to one in their first game Friday before beating North Battleford Comprehensive in two sets later that night.

They rounded up their tournament on Saturday with a two-set sweep of Lloydminster and another two-set sweep of Warman.

Before falling in its first game to St. Mary, the Carlton Senior Girls beat Lloydminster two sets to none and beat Warman in three sets in their first game on Saturday. They finished the night with a two sets to none loss against North Battleford to finish third overall.

On the 5A Boys side, the St. Mary Marauders tied for the best record in their regional group with Carlton at 3-1.

The Marauders’ three wins came against North Battleford (two sets to none), Warman (two sets to none), and Lloydminster (two sets to one). The team fell in its final game of the tournament to Carlton two sets to one.

The Crusaders meanwhile, posted other wins against Lloydminster (two sets to none), and North Battleford (two sets to none). Carlton’s only loss of the tournament came in the first game against Warman where they fell in three sets.

With the regional tournaments out the way, all Prince Albert teams are looking ahead to provincials this weekend in Prince Albert.

Carlton will host the 5A Boys Provincial tournament starting Friday afternoon while the first games of the 5A Girls tournament goes Friday with game split between Sask. Polytechnic and St. Mary High School.
