Accused in weekend homicide at MLCN makes first court appearance

A man accused of second degree murder made his first court appearance Monday morning at Prince Albert Provincial Court.

Walker Smith, 29, was remanded to Nov. 28.

The charge has to do with an incident that happened early Sunday morning at Montreal Lake Cree Nation.

Around 3:15 a.m, RCMP received a request to help EMS at a residence on the reserve.

Upon arrival, officers located an injured man who was declared deceased by EMS at the scene. The victim was identified as 41-year-old Kevin Stewart from Montreal Lake Cree Nation.

The relationship between the accused and the victim was not disclosed by RCMP.

Over the past two days, a number of messages of condolences have been shared on social media. One person wrote “another good soul gone.. I just seen him yesterday, had some laughs and filled up his car … rip Kevin Stewart .. you will be dearly missed by many.”
