The Prince Albert Mintos were able to claim a weekend split during their quick two-game road trip in Swift Current against the Legionnaires.

The Mintos began the slate on Saturday night at the Innovation Credit Union iPlex when they took a hard 5-1 loss. Porter Nickason got the ball rolling for Swift Current early in the first, scoring just 58 seconds in. P.A. had a response a couple minutes later when Konnor Watson tied things up for the Mintos.

From there, however, it was all Swift Current. Over the next two periods, the Legionnaires went on to score four more times with a second-period marker from Griffin Darby followed by a trio of goals in the third by Jackson Fox, Jace Egland, and Kade Stringer.

P.A. netminder Joshua Henry got the start and made 19 saves in the contest while Berney Weston stood tall in the opposite goal, making 42 saves to collect the win.

On Sunday, things ended in the Mintos’ favour although the contest could have gone either way.

The lamp was lit four times in the first period with Taite Donkin getting the party started midway through the first. Swift Current replied with a powerplay goal a few minutes later before tacking on another while short-handed, making it 2-1. With three minutes to go in the frame, Kale Margolis potted the equalizer for Prince Albert to head into the intermission tied at a pair.

Fast forward to the third and Stringer broke the deadlock early in the final frame, capitalizing on the man advantage. However, the Mintos didn’t quit and scored a short time later courtesy of Scott McLean.

Neither team could light the lamp again until overtime when Watson played the role of hero for Prince Albert, scoring on a partial breakaway and shooting far side to win it for the Mintos, 4-3.

Brady Holtvogt was in goal for the P.A. and stopped 25 shots en route to the win, while his counterpart, Weston, made 34 saves and took the loss.
