Going for gold

Timberwolves to face Sask East Oilers in Ron Gunville Memorial Tournament final

Nov 12, 2023 | 11:11 AM

The Lake Country Timberwolves are looking to repeat as Ron Gunville Memorial Tournament champions on Sunday afternoon when they match up against the Sask East Oilers.

The Timberwolves, formerly known as the Prince Albert Vulcans, took last year’s gold medal winning 4-1 over the Indigenous Sports Academy (ISA) from Saskatoon.

In this year’s finals, P.A. will face the Oilers who are based out of the Yorkton, Melville, and Moosomin areas. Additionally, both teams are undefeated entering the gold medal contest.

The Timberwolves come into the game having won all their round-robin matches by more than two goals. On Friday morning, they started off the tournament by downing the Humboldt Broncos 7-4 and later that same night, they doubled up the Martensville Marauders 4-2. They then capped off their three-game preliminary round against the Parkland Elks, cruising to a 5-2 win on Saturday.

Sask East has had to work to get to the finals as they narrowly lost two of their three round-robin games. The Oilers started off strong as they steamrolled the River East Marauders from Winnipeg, 14-0 to open the tournament on Friday afternoon. They played again later that same night and pulled out an exciting 4-3 overtime win over the Parkland Elks. To wrap up the prelims, Sask East again squeaked out a win in overtime, only this time against Humboldt winning 5-4 to advance to the finals.

The gold medal match at the Ron Gunville Memorial Tournament gets underway at 1:30 from the Art Hauser Centre. Warmups begin at 1:00.
