Carbon Monoxide Awareness Week Nov 6-10

It’s Carbon Monoxide Awareness Week, have you checked your detectors recently?

The Saskatchewan Government has dedicated November 6-10 to educating the public about the dangers of the odorless gas and is encouraging everyone to do a check on their systems.

“A working CO detector can alert you to danger before physical symptoms appear, which is why our government made CO alarms mandatory in all buildings with bedrooms, regardless of when they were constructed,” said Minister Responsible for SaskEnergy Dustin Duncan in a press release.

According to the release, CO exposure can lead to headaches, nausea, drowsiness, and death and the release said it’s best to test the alarms once a month and be sure to check the expiration date. Monitors must be installed on all floors where there are bedrooms and according to Chris Stinson, SaskEnergy service technician in the release, if there has been any exposure to get fresh air.

“If you feel the exposure is severe, call 911 or seek medical attention,” said “If your CO alarm goes off, contact SaskEnergy to check if there is indeed a CO issue in your home or building. Fire departments are another resource that will respond to CO calls. Follow any instructions given to ensure the safety of all occupants.”
