Take a drive down 15th Avenue East in Prince Albert and you’ll see a number of houses decked out in spooky Halloween attire.

No house is more noticeable than 3213, where Dennis Adams has made his scary decorations into an annual tradition.

“We’ve been doing it for a number of years…we just really enjoy doing it,” said Adams. “The reason we do it is just to have families get together and come for the night and enjoy themselves together. It’s nice to see kids dress up and just be kids for a night, so it’s a perfect family night.”

“It’s just fun, just being a big kid and just being part of the community and sharing a fun community night together. We have people that will come and donate treats and just add to the cause and make the kids’ night even more special.

Adams guessed he’s had the display gong for about 20 years now, with more and more trick or treaters every year. Last year they had over 2,000 kids and he said they’re expected a similar number this year.

This year, trick or treaters will encounter ghoulish figures in the Adams’ yard along with frightening sound effects. There’s also a new addition this year, Adams explained.

“We have a floating witch that’s like nine feet up in the air floating in the sky…that’s really cool,” Adams said. “Every year we try to add like a feature item.”

Adams’ wife Becky said if anyone spent a Halloween night at their house they would understand exactly why they’ve kept the tradition going all these years.

“If you had a chance to hand out the treats, you would know why we do this year after year. The kids are amazing, that’s why we do it,” she said. “Sometimes we think of stopping. And then you have a year where all the kids come to the door and you think ‘you can’t stop this.’ They just love it.”

Dennis Adams added that some of his neighbours have also joined in on the fun.

“Even on 15th Avenue it’s really really busy,” he said. “I’ve noticed lots of my neighbours are really getting into decorating.”

One of those neighbours is Ken Demerais, who lives just down the street. He’s putting on a larger display for the first time this year for his grandchildren.

“It’s my grandchildren’s mother that does that. She buys the costumes and I just put them up and pay the power bill,” Demerais laughed. “But the grandchildren get lots of joy out of them. People even stop us with their children too, and that’s nice.”

He added that they get a fair share of trick or treaters and they actually ran out of candy last year.

“We’re not cheap on candy. I think we’ve got 10 boxes of chips already, 400 bags of chips (for this year),” Demerais said, adding that 15th Avenue is an ideal stretch for trick or treaters.

“They go down this side and then come back the other side. That’s what Halloween’s about…they enjoy that and we do too. They have lots of fun those kids.”

The Halloween weather forecast for Prince Albert is calling for cloudy skies with a high of minus 1 and a low of minus 8.
