St. Mary defeats Carlton to win 5A city championship

The St. Mary senior girl’s volleyball team claimed the 5A City Championship on home court on Wednesday night, defeating their cross-town rivals Carlton in straight sets.

The Marauders took sets one and two with ease winning 25-13 and 25-9 before Carlton made things close in the third set. However, St. Mary prevailed with a tight 25-20 win to sweep the Crusaders and claim the 5A title.

“Volleyball can be simplified into two major skills, serving and passing and I thought we did both of those very well tonight,” said St. Mary Head Coach Shaun Hunko. “That allowed us to run our offence and terminate the ball. I’m really happy with the performance tonight.”

Senior Heidi Regnier led the Marauders with 10 kills while fellow senior Sydney Batiuk had both seven kills and seven aces.

This victory is just one of many milestones this season for the Marauders as they have placed on the podium in their last three tournaments over the course of the past three weekends.

During Thanksgiving weekend, St. Mary claimed bronze while at the David Pysyk Memorial Tournament in Spruce Grove, Alta. The following weekend, the Marauders won the TCU Cup at St. Joseph in Saskatoon before claiming gold again this past weekend at the Mustang Volley for the first time since 1995.

“We need to continue to practice hard and push each other to be the best that we can,” said senior Cassidy Schrader when asked how to keep the success rolling heading down the final stretch.

St. Mary still has a long way to go before the end of the season.

The Marauders are getting set to host their joint tournament with the St. Mary senior boys volleyball next weekend on Nov. 3-4. Then, St. Mary will head to regionals in Lloydminster the following weekend on Nov. 10-11 before hosting the provincial tournament on Nov. 17-18.
