Multiple Sask. communities receiving funding for water infrastructure projects

The Village of Zenon Park is one of nine communities in Saskatchewan getting funding to undertake a water infrastructure project.

It’s receiving over $80,000 from the federal government and roughly $67,000 from the provincial government so they can fix up the existing water tower. The Village is also contributing nearly $54,000 to the project.

“It hasn’t been done in like 30 years, obviously the inside of the tower has some wear from ice building up during the winter,” said Eric Valois, the mayor of Zenon Park.

The funding will also allow the village to replace the de-icing circulation system inside the tower. Valois noted it hasn’t had a working one for a couple of years.

“It had quit one year, and the ice had built up and removed the pipe from inside of the tower, so it was kind of just floating around in there,” he said.

The village also wants to replace the tower’s electrical system, though Valois explained they may need additional funding to get this done.

Other communities receiving funding include the Village of Denzil south of North Battleford and the Village of Paradise Hill north of Lloydminster.

Denzil is getting nearly $990,000 to upgrade its water treatment plant and sewer system. Paradise Hill is receiving over $778,000 to replace its chemical treatment process of water with biological pre-treatment filters.

Just like Zenon Park, Denzil and Paradise Hill will be putting some of their own funds into the projects. Their funding must cover around 25 per cent of the costs.

The six other communities getting funding are the Village of Dodsland ($97,000), the Town of Fort Qu’Appelle ($1.75 million), the Village of Harris ($626,000), the Town of Leader ($1.4 million), the Village of Neudorf ($348,000), and the Town of Shaunavon ($840,000).

In total, the federal government is allocating over $3.8 million, while the province is providing nearly $3.2 million.
