Mintos continue hot start to season with six-point weekend

The Prince Albert Mintos are firing on all cylinders to start the 2023-24 campaign.

The Mintos wrapped up their second and final three-in-three weekend of the season on Sunday, where they came out on top of all three contests. The win is also their fourth in a row.

P.A. started their weekend down south on Friday with a 4-2 win over the Yorkton Maulers. The Mintos then repeated their efforts a day after, this time beating the Maulers 7-3. To finish off the perfect weekend, the Green and Gold welcomed Notre Dame to the Art Hauser Centre where they cruised past the Hounds in a 6-1 win.

“I liked our effort, our structure was really good all weekend,” said Mintos Head Coach Tim Leonard. “Our powerplay got rocking down in Yorkton and overall, I think our work ethic is second to none. We’re staying out of the box and we’re working hard and we’re doing things right. We’re tough to play against right now and I told the kids [that] I’m proud of them. That was a tough weekend.”

Leading the charge in points this weekend was a trio of Mintos, including Owen Nelson, Teigan Semchyshen, and Taite Donkin who each had five points. Behind them with four points were Kale Margolis and Carter Cole meanwhile with three points on the weekend were Van Taylor and Kelan Simmonds. Adding two points to their season totals this past weekend were Will Whitter and Konnor Watson while Scott McLean, Abinet Klassen, Kayden Stroeder, Simon Garchinski, Jordon Abrametz, William Chabot, and Lincoln Rogers each had one.

Complete box scores of either of the three games can be found by clicking the following days: Friday, Saturday, Sunday.

Mintos netminder Brady Holtvogt got the nod on Saturday and Sunday’s games, combining for 53 saves on the weekend as the Humboldt product picked up league-leading wins number five and six on the season. His goaltending partner Joshua Henry also got in on the fun, picking up his first career SMAAAHL win on Friday in Yorkton, making 20 saves.

With the three wins this weekend, the Mintos have claimed sole possession of first place in the league with a 7-2-1 record.

“We got good character this year. We were younger last year and the guys all came back bigger and stronger and they want to prove something. They’re buying into everything that we’re selling to them and that’s the biggest part, that they accept their roles and everybody is happy with it,” said Leonard when asked about the hot start to the year.

Prince Albert is back in action on Wednesday night when they travel to Saskatoon to take on the defending champion Blazers at the SaskTel Centre. Puck drop is at 7:00 p.m.
