Memorial bench to bring awareness to Prince Albert cold case

Prince Albert’s Theron Morin said he is grateful and overwhelmed by the support he has received.

Through an online fundraiser, he was able to raise over $2,300. The money is being used to build a memorial bench, in honour of Morin’s mother Jean Lachance who was found dead in September of 1991. Morin explained the idea for the bench came about after seeing all the development happening in the area.

“I wanted to get something set up before it became a parking lot,” he said.

The bench will be placed off the Rotary Trail, in the area southwest of Victoria Hospital where Lachance’s body was found. The initial fundraising goal was $2,137 and Morin said he expected it could take weeks to reach that goal.

“It actually happened in less than two days,” he said.

Expressing gratitude to the City of Prince Albert, specifically Parks Manager Tim Yeaman, for helping him get this far, Morin explained a company out of Saskatoon that has done other memorial benches in the city, has been tasked to do the work.

“I was hoping it would get done before the snow flies but I have to be realistic. I want to do it right,” he said.

Morin was only six years old when he was told his mother, would not be coming home and while he cannot remember his mother’s voice, he has other good memories including the walks they would take.

Police have said the file remains open and under investigation. In the meantime, Morin is just happy with all the people who have donated and made his dream come true.

“A lot of people I don’t even know and just being very generous.”
