More Ukrainian families to come to P.A. prompting a call for donations

More than 100 Ukrainian families have already arrived in Prince Albert since the start of the war with Russia, but more are expected to come soon.

Sonya Jahn, who has led the charge in bringing Ukrainian newcomers to the city, said they’re in need of more donations and supplies.

“We’re currently in need of financial donations. These donations specifically go to purchase beds for the families and the children that are arriving as well as for food.”

Those donations can be made at the Calvary United Church through its Benevolent Fund. On top of the monetary donations, Jahn said they are in need of many items including furniture, bedding, personal hygiene, pots and pans, and other kitchen items.

Most importantly, Jahn is asking the community to not forget about Ukraine and the conflict these families are fleeing.

“The need is still very great. We know the war is still on in Ukraine,” she said. “We don’t know when this war will end. It may not be in the top front for people to be thinking about these days but it’s still going on full force.”

She added that the families who have arrived are grateful for the support they’ve received from Prince Albert residents and beyond.

The Russian war on Ukraine entered its 600^th day on Monday which has claimed almost 10,000 civilian lives in Ukraine. Roughly 166,000 Ukrainians have come to Canada.

This past July, the federal government announced that Ukrainians who have fled the Russian invasion and want to stay in Canada will be able to apply for permanent residency as of Oct. 23, if they have temporary resident status and at least one family member in Canada.
