Mintos split weekend with Legionnaires, pick up three points

The Prince Albert Mintos were 50/50 during this past weekend’s two-game set versus the Swift Current Legionnaires at the Art Hauser Centre.

The Mintos first played the visitors on Saturday night where the game needed extras to decide a winner.

The game started hot for P.A. with rookie forward Taite Donkin scoring just over five minutes in with the help of Owen Nelson. From there, however, the goal lamp would stay dark for the remainder of the period and through the second as it would finally turn on again midway through the third, only this time for Swift Current. Jace Egland got the Legionnaires on the board with assists from Trae Lees and Wesley Olson to force overtime.

When that solved nothing, the contest went to a shootout. Either of the first two skaters for both clubs managed to score but in the third round, Egland scored again to give Swift Current the upper hand before netminder Berney Weston shut down Konnor Watson’s equalizing attempt to take game one over Prince Albert, 2-1 in a shootout.

COMPLETE BOX SCORE

The Mintos didn’t have to wait long to get their revenge, though, as game two happened on Sunday afternoon.

Abinet Klassen got the party started in the first before Kade Stringer pulled the Legionnaires back to even as the score stayed 1-1 heading into the second.

The floodgates opened in the middle period for Prince Albert as they found the back of the net three times. Simon Garchinski and Jordon Abrametz found the back of the net, while Teigan Semchyshen had a pair of assists and Kelan Simmonds and Carter Cole both had one. Meanwhile, Donkin picked up a goal and an assist in the frame as well.

Donkin wasn’t done there as he helped on Nelson’s third-period marker to get the final back-and-forth frame underway. Kayd Ruedig scored a short time later for Swift Current when Kale Margolis answered right back for the Mintos two minutes later. Ruedig added another before the final buzzer as P.A. took game two, 6-3.

COMPLETE BOX SCORE

Brady Holtvogt was in goal for the Mintos for both games, stopping 18 shots in game one while turning aside another 23 in game two to help Prince Albert improve to 4-2-1 on the campaign.

On the opposite end of the ice, Weston made 25 saves on Saturday while Jacob Morris had 33 stops in Sunday’s loss. Swift Current is now 3-2-0 on the year.

The Mintos are back in action for their second three-in-three of the year next weekend. They will first head down to Yorkton on Friday and Saturday to face the Maulers, before returning home to the Art Hauser Centre to host the Notre Dame Hounds on Sunday afternoon.
