Cath. school division enrollment increases with newcomers while Sask. Rivers dips slightly

The numbers are in for the enrollment in Prince Albert’s two school divisions with the Catholic division counting over 100 new students in their schools.

Director of Education Lorel Trumier said that a lot of newcomers, particularly from Ukraine, have chosen a faith-based education.

“We’re very pleased with the enrollment numbers in our Catholic schools across our system. We have over 3,070 students,” said Trumier. “That’s well over our projected number.”

A lot of the new students are from immigrant families with some in the city because their parents are travelling from abroad.

As always, the Catholic division has high enrollment in their French immersion programs which includes over 30 per cent of their students.

St. Mary High School has reached over 1,000 students as well.

Both divisions are fully staffed when it comes to teachers but are looking for educational assistants.

Superintendent of Human Resources Cory Trann of the Saskatchewan Rivers School Division says they are within two per cent of last year’s enrollment numbers.

“We’re just slightly, slightly below so it’s been a positive return to school for a lot of our kids and families and we’ve got some staffing in place to support them,” he said.

Despite fluctuations during the pandemic when a lot of families educated at home, their numbers are now back to normal, Trann said.

Last year, Sask Rivers had almost 8,500 students. Even a two per cent reduction is fewer than 170 students.
