U18AA Foxes capture gold at Emily Clark Classic

The Prince Albert U18AA Family Pizza Foxes are returning home from their tournament in Saskatoon this past weekend as champions.

The Foxes were playing in the Emily Clark Classic where they went undefeated through the tournament en route to a first-place finish.

Foxes Head Coach Scott Reed shared his thoughts on his team’s performance saying he is happy to see this kind of success so early on in the season.

“We had some great goaltending and some timely goal-scoring with contributions from all three lines. Our defence played great – it was a total team effort which is why we came out on top this weekend. I’m very proud of the girls.”

The Foxes began their tournament against the host Saskatoon Comet Legends where they cruised to a 5-1 win. Game two was a bit more of a battle against the Parkland Fire as neither team won or lost. The game ended with a tie score of 1-1. Game three was also a dominant outing for the Black and Orange as they defeated the South East Goldwings 3-1 to claim first in Pool A.

In their semi-final game, Prince Albert matched up with the Regina Rebels. Having been tied 2-2 after regulation, the game went to a 3-on-3 overtime period where the Foxes were able to find the back of the net to advance to the finals. There they met the Goldwings again for a championship game rematch, where the Foxes were able to take them down 3-1 to capture gold.

“Typically the last few years, the U18 program hasn’t had much success so this is a nice bouquet for the female hockey program in P.A. to see these girls at this age group really play well together and show that they’re capable of doing great things this year,” Reed said.

On top of their gold medal, a pair of Foxes players were named to the tournament All-Star team including rookie forward Sarah Johns and defencemen Alexis Wawro.

The Emily Clark Classic was a tune-up ahead of Prince Albert’s regular-season opener on Saturday night when the Foxes play host to the Parkland Fire. Puck drop is scheduled for 5:15 at Kinsmen Arena.
