Local golf courses get set to close for season as winter looms

Editor’s Note: This story has been corrected to state that Kachur’s last day of golfing is Oct. 15, not the 14th as previously written.

As the days get shorter and the weather gets cooler, many golf courses around the Prince Albert area are getting ready to close their doors for the long, and fast-approaching Saskatchewan winter.

Many of the local courses are set to shut down later this week with some already being closed for the season.

Prince Albert’s Cooke Municipal Golf Course closed on Thanksgiving Monday while other places like Marks 9 will be closing on Tuesday. Kachur’s last day is on Oct. 15 as is Silver Hills Golf Resort.

Other major golf courses like Waskesiu have already closed for the season while Elk Ridge shut down on Monday as well. Candle Lake is preparing to close its course sometime this week however there is no confirmed date at the time of this article’s publication.

Looking back at the summer, many of the courses said they had seen a busier season than usual in 2023, including Silver Hills Golf Resort where co-owner Edward Dewhurst said there were many new faces playing the course this past season.

“We’ve been getting many new golfers out and I was quite surprised with that,” he said. “We’ve had a hot summer and we’ve been busy with a lot of young people and couples and not just the regulars so it’s been a busy year.”

Owner of Kachurs Golf Course, Patty Kachur said they had the same experience this summer, calling it an excellent golf season.

“It was a good year – busy, busy, busy,” she said. “It was a better than average year and we had no rainout days this year either.”

Candle Lake also saw an influx of golfers this year where the resort’s Director of Golf Don Ludwig was pleased to see the rise in numbers.

“We were a little bit higher attendance compared to last year, very similar to last year. We had an exceptional year with the weather, very few rainout days so we can’t complain. It was a very good season.”

Each of the courses in the area said they are aiming for a late April/early May opening date in 2024 weather permitting.
