Prince Albert weightlifter muscles his way to Top 10 finish at International competition

Prince Albert’s Brett Sather is feeling really good about his recent performance at the North American Weightlifting Championship.

The 22-year-old finished first in his session and seventh overall in his weight division out of 41 athletes. The event was held weekend in Pleasanton, California and Sather told paNOW it’s the best competition he’s done to date.

“And for it to be the first competition of the year, it was a great way to start the season off,” he said.

In order to qualify for the event in California, Sather had to first record a certain total at a prior sanctioned competition, and within a certain time period. He acknowledged he’d wanted to do this for a while.

“USA Weightlifting puts on some pretty amazing events and so to be at one was definitely really cool,” he said.

At the competition, Sather had to perform two separate lifts – a snatch and a clean and a jerk – both movements requiring massive amounts of technique and strength to lift the weight from the floor to above his head. Sather’s highest recorded clean and jerk was 319 lbs. and for the snatch, it was 264 lbs. Reflecting on his lifts, Sather explained that prior to the competition, his snatches had not been as strong.

“I made a couple adjustments technically over the last little while and I wasn’t feeling as strong, but I felt a little more dialed in. It was kind of a surprise on that end, just feeling so more control and confidence,” he said.

Noting how he just bought his first house, Sather said his focus is on that right now but down the road aims to qualify again for nationals.

During the week, Sather trains and coaches at Saskpro Crossfit in Prince Albert. Two athletes from Saskatoon (Crossfit 306 Weightlifting) were the only other Canadians in his division.
