Huskies, Rustlers set to face off at Carlton in preseason action

Sep 21, 2023 | 6:00 AM

Carlton’s CPAC gymnasium will be the place to be on Thursday night.

The University of Saskatchewan’s Women’s Basketball team is set to play in preseason action against the Lakeland College Rustlers at Carlton with some local talent set to hit the hardwood.

The game will be the first preseason game held at Carlton since the pandemic, something that organizer Adie Schenk said is exciting to see not only for sports fans but for the city as well.

“We’re excited to have these two teams meeting again and to have a Carlton alum as well as a St. Mary alum playing in this game,” she said. “We’re excited to host this again and for them to get a preseason game in and be able to host some excellent basketball in Prince Albert.”

Crusader alumni Gage Grassick will be on the Huskies side of the ball while Marauder alumni Makylla Vachon will be playing for the opposing Rustlers.

According to Schenk, the game isn’t being held just for pure entertainment.

“Basketball is a great opportunity to open doors after high school,” she explained.

“[It’s] to be able to show kids that playing post-secondary basketball is not out of the question for any of our kids growing up in the city. It started with a connection to the Huskies and bringing them up here and just exposing our kids to a higher level of basketball – for some, exposing them to the game of basketball all together. It’s exciting to bring that level of basketball to the city for some kids who may not get to ever see a game.”

Tickets for the game can be bought at the door for $10 apiece while children five and under get in for free. Doors open at 5:00 and tipoff is at 6:00.
