Regular season fast approaching for Mann-Northway Northern Bears

Sep 20, 2023 | 6:00 AM

The regular season is just 10 days away for the Prince Albert Mann-Northway Northern Bears in the Saskatchewan Female Under-18 AAA Hockey League.

The Bears kicked off their pre-season schedule with a 3-1 win over Battlefords on Sunday. They’re now preparing for a pre-season tournament in Portage la Prairie, Man this weekend before beginning their regular season at home against the Weyburn Gold Wings on Sept. 30.

“We’re going to play four games there (in Portage) and I think a lot of it is just going to be sorting out and finding where we are as a hockey team,” said Northern Bears Head Coach Steve Young. “So to play each team will be important but at the same time we really need to focus on our team and where we are and where we need to be.”

Young said the recipe for success for his hockey club this season is simple.

“We have to be a team that’s going to have to work hard to have success. If we take nights off, it’s not going to be easy for us,” Young said. “The biggest thing is we want to be a team that works hard and competes and gives ourselves a chance to win every night.”

Forward Julia Cey will be the captain of the team this year, while Tristyn Endicott will be an alternate captain.

“Those two girls right now are girls that we expect to lead our hockey club and have good years,” said Young, who is entering his second full season as the head coach of the Northern Bears.

He added that he’ll have an experienced group of players on the ice this year.

“We’ve done something a little different this year…we’ve got players that are new to our team but they’re not necessarily new to the league,” Young said. “So we’re going to hope that we have a lot of leadership and expertise of girls that have played in the league.”

Opening night on Sept. 30 will be a special night for the Northern Bears, as the team will honour cancer survivor and community staple Bruce Vance.

“It’s going to be an important game in a lot of ways…it’s the start of the season and to have that all going on as well is going to be important,” said Young, who worked alongside Vance when they were with the Prince Albert Raiders. “He’s done a lot of work for all the community teams, but I think there’s a special place for him with the Bears and it’s going to be important that way.”
