P.A. Terry Fox Run sees double the turnout for 43rd annual event

Update: The final amount raised in Prince Albert was $29,535.50

A large crowd of around 90-100 people of all ages gathered at the Alfred Jenkins Fieldhouse on Sunday afternoon to embark on the 43rd annual Terry Fox Run in Prince Albert.

It’s the second year that the run has been held in the city since the pandemic where this year’s event saw double the participants compared to the roughly 40-50 people who ran last year.

Terry Fox foundation board member Shelley Mitchell was happy to see the event double in attendance and hopes to see it keep gaining in popularity as the years go on.

“I think that over time [the attendance] has kind of dwindled, like people forgot that [the Terry Fox Run] was still here and that we’re still doing this once a year,” she said. “I think what we need to do is get it back out there, show people that we’re still here. Hopefully next year we double it again.”

So far this year, the Terry Fox Foundation has raised roughly $5,000 in Prince Albert and to help raise money and to promote the run on Sunday, the Foundation teamed up with the Aurora Chiropractic, Massage Therapy and Health Centre in the city to host a BBQ, bake sale, and car show.

According to Mitchell, donations are still being collected from the event that raised nearly $1,500, which is included in the total $5,000 raised.

“This was our first car show and we’re hoping to make it an annual thing,” she said.

She added that plans are in place to host the car show again next year.

As a mother of a cancer survivor, Mitchell shared her thoughts on what this event means to her.

“It is amazing just to have the support, Prince Albert has been amazing to our family,” she explained. “Now it’s our turn to give back. She’s a survivor, and she’s here and now we can help others. This is one of our many things that we do for cancer fundraising.”

To date, over $850 million has been raised for cancer research in Terry’s name through the annual Terry Fox Run, held across Canada and around the world.
