Carlton’s and St. Mary’s girls’ volleyball clubs say they are ready for battle ahead of Carlton’s home tournament this weekend.

Crusader head coach Tori Glynn spoke to paNOW ahead of the tournament and said it will be a good time for the team to gel together and build chemistry.

“It will be a good opportunity for us to get to know each other as a team on the court and get comfortable in our rotations and our different positions,” she said. “I think the team is very excited. It’s always exciting to be able to play in front of your home crowd and your family and friends. We’re hoping to get some competitive matches out of this tournament.”

Their cross-town rival St. Mary will compete in the tournament as well. The Marauders have nine returning players from their roster last season, seven of whom are seniors where head coach Shaun Hunko said he and his team are hopeful heading into the weekend.

“It’s still early in the season and we’re working towards getting better every day,” he said. “We’re feeling confident but we obviously have to play to our potential. There’s a lot of good teams out there so we still have to be at our best. We’re hoping to make it into the medal round and go from there.”

This weekend’s tournament will be more than just a game on the court.

Entry fees from all of the teams will be donated to the Arabelle Gola Memorial Scholarship, which is named after a Carlton student who passed away earlier this year. Also in her honour, fans are being encouraged to wear pink to games throughout the tournament and at the beginning of each team’s first game, they are being asked to hold a moment of silence for Arabelle in their huddle.

“A couple of our senior players had come up to us [coaches] and said ‘Hey we have a few ideas, we want to do something in memory of Arabelle Gola’,” Glynn explained. “They really wanted it to be a way to honour her and honour her memory so we’re looking forward to being able to do that this weekend.”

While the Crusaders are hosting their tournament this weekend, the Marauders are gearing up to host their tournament at St. Mary next weekend on Sept. 22 and 23.
