Carlton High School wins Unified Sports Spotlight Award

Carlton Comprehensive High School won this year’s Unified Sports Spotlight Award as its Unified Sports program continues to grow.

The school will receive the award at the 2023 Saskatchewan SaskTel Awards on Sept. 22 in Regina.

“It’s an honour to be mentioned for all the hard work that the kids did,” said Chris Dumelie, who is one of the teachers who coaches the team. “Really it’s just about getting to the kids and giving them a chance for having an opportunity to play sports.”

Special Olympics presents the award annually to one Unified Sports participant in the province. Carlton has been part of the Unified Sports team since 2018, primarily through basketball. The school hosted a basketball tournament last year.

The school currently has 18 athletes in the program after starting with just six.

“Basically it takes Special Olympic athletes and students who normally wouldn’t get a chance to participate in sports and puts them in a setting where they can play together and have some fun, just like regular sports programs would,” Dumelie said.

Unified is just high school aged athletes. Some of the athletes could then go on and compete in Special Olympics, Dumelie said.

Dumelie added the program is also growing locally, with St. Mary High School and Wesmor High School also starting their own teams recently.

Dumelie said he’ll accept the award on Sept. 22 alongside a couple of his colleagues who also coach the team.
