Registration numbers on the rise as P.A. Minor Hockey prepares for new season

In a matter of weeks, arenas across the Prince Albert area will be buzzing as the 2023-24 hockey season begins.

Preparations for the coming campaign have been ongoing for months now and staff with the Minor Hockey Association say they’re ready for the season to start.

Former Raiders announcer Trevor Redden is the General Manager for Prince Albert Minor Hockey and spoke to paNOW about how preparations have been going so far. With the main registration deadline already passed, Redden said the numbers are looking very strong.

“They’re up from where they were last year, trending closer to what they were pre-COVID,” he said. “Definitely excited about a bit of a bounce back in registration numbers.”

Redden didn’t have the final numbers for the season as some late registrations are trickling in.

With the start of the new season also comes new partnerships for many teams including the U18AA boys team, formerly the Vulcans. Last month, Lake Country Co-op was announced as the new sponsor for the team and has rebranded them the Lake Country Timberwolves.

Mann-Northway has also signed a major sponsorship for the Prince Albert Northern Bears where they hope to support the team financially and help grow female hockey in the city.

As for coaches and volunteers, Redden said, right now, many positions, including the AA coaching spots are filled but there will always be room for more.

“As we start filling out the other leagues and the younger teams, we are definitely going to be asking any parent who is interested in becoming a coach or assistant coach or helping out, don’t be afraid to put your hand forward and help out.”

He added that anyone interested in volunteering as a coach needs to register on the PA Minor Hockey website.
