$1.5 million turnover coming for Carlton running track

Sep 7, 2023 | 1:00 PM

With an anticipated cost of just under $1.5 million, the Harry Jerome running track is on deck to be upgraded next year.

The City of Prince Albert and Saskatchewan Rivers School Division share ownership of the football field and track and will share the cost of upgrading the track at $750,000 each.

The field portion of the work will be done by Sask. Rivers exclusively.

Current conditions at the track mean it does not meet the requirements that Saskatchewan Athletics holds in order for it to be used to host the provincial track and field tournament.

Prince Albert was supposed to host next year but that was declined because of the state of the track.

A contractor will be hired by next month with construction to start run from April to August next year.

By September, the track should be ready for use.

City staff also say they will be asking council to create a financial reserve for future maintenance and improvement.

The track is located in Prime Minister’s Park, next to Carlton and the Art Hauser Centre and has been jointly operated and owned by the city and SRSD since the 1970s.
