Several players from Prince Albert had their moment in the spotlight this past weekend at the U17 and U19 Field Lacrosse Nationals.

Four players from the city were a part of the U19 Saskatchewan team that claimed bronze in Prince Edward Island.

The players were Brayden Rieger, Tobey Oshanek, Jacob Boettcher, and Talon Sandry who were also coached by PA’s Matt Robin.

Robin told paNOW that when the final seconds ticked away, there was nothing but elation.

“We had a goal in mind when we gathered these athletes together and said we wanted to do a repeat and get a medal like we did in the previous year and we succeeded with that,” he said.

Ziegler led the way with three goals in that game and multiple assists.

Robin said it was quite the experience for the players, even those who’ve played in national tournaments before.

“There were a lot of new faces and new experiences for those athletes in regard to being on that national level and seeing all the different skill sets that are across Canada.”

The U19 players weren’t the only ones making their city and province proud as there were five athletes representing Prince Albert at the U17 Nationals, also in PEI. They were Rowan Rudderham, Chase Lehner, Crosby Ratt, Sam Cooper, and Mitch Pott.

The team finished the tournament in fifth place overall, ending their tournament with a big win over Quebec.

Robin said having this many players compete at the national level shows how strong the sport of lacrosse is in Prince Albert.

“These athletes got to play against other athletes that are going to play in university down in the States or university here in Canada,” he said. “It shows that you can come from everywhere as long as you put in the work and you show the passion for the sport and the love of the game and match up with everybody.”
