Agriculture Roundup for Wednesday, September 6, 2023

Sep 6, 2023 | 9:39 AM

A weed that appeared beside an Ontario cornfield should be a concern for all Canadian farmers.

Ontario provincial weed management specialist Mike Cowbrough said the plant found in Wellington County has been confirmed as palmer amaranth.

This particular weed species has been found in the United States but hasn’t been seen in a significant way in Canada. The only other known report of palmer amaranth was in a southern Manitoba bean field in 2021.

The broadleaf weed can grow to a height of eight feet and can spread aggressively. It’s also adaptable against herbicides making it even more difficult to control.

A brand of air seeding equipment that’s been around for roughly 50 years will vanish in the 2024 model year.

Concord is a brand owned since 2021 by Väderstad. Certain Concord products and design elements will be incorporated into the Väderstad-branded air seeder lineup in the near future.

The parent firm and its dealer network will continue to provide parts and service for past Concord customers.

The Concord name dates to 1977, when Howard and Brian Dahl founded Concord, Inc. to make and sell air seeding equipment into the North American market.

Väderstad, whose other product lines include the Canadian-made Seed Hawk air drill brand, acquired in 2013. It has since gradually gone through the process of integrating the Concord brand into the Väderstad product line.

The program will include mentee Dr. Bree Kelln who will work with mentors Andrea Brocklebank and Dr. Murray Jelinski while mentee Dr. Francois Teste will have Laura and Mark Hoimyr and Kevin Steinley as mentors.

The third mentee is Dr. Rodolpho Martin do Prado. His mentors are Stan Christensen and Diane Allard. Dr. Stephanie Lam will be mentored by Tammi Ribey and Betty-Jo Almond.
