The 2023 Canadian Men’s Senior Golf Championships got underway Tuesday morning with three local golfers in the field.

Prince Albert’s Marty Ring and Cliff Selander each shot an opening round 80, while Trent Kachur of Christopher Lake fired an 80, putting him at eight over par.

The four-day tournament is being played at the Big Sky Golf & Country Club in Pemberton, BC.

“First round today didn’t quite go to my expectations,” said Ring, who is playing in his third straight senior tournament. “Obviously I had a couple of practice rounds, trying to feel your way around the golf course. I shot 80 today…it was a plus-eight round.”

“I made a couple of mistakes and they cost me. And that’s golf, sometimes golf is hard. I’ve got some work to do if I want to stick around for the final three rounds. I’ve got another round tomorrow (Wednesday).”

Ring said there’s always stiff competition when playing in a national championship.

“It is a special event, I mean it is a national championship,” he said. “The course played hard for some, obviously a little bit easier for others. But it’s a national championship and you’re up against some of the best.”

The tournament consists of 156 golfers, mostly from Canada, but a handful from the United States as well.

“I played with two fellows from the United States, one from Alabama and one from Georgia,” Ring said. “It’s always fun to meet different people, and I get to play with these two again tomorrow. And they were absolutely fantastic out on the golf course today.”

Ring added that the course is in immaculate condition.

“It really is a stunning place to play golf, every one of your shots is flying towards a mountain. The ball just seems to hang there forever. Not a whole lot of elevation change, so from that perspective it’s a little bit easier,” he said.

Ring added the weather forecast for the week is favourable.

“We just had an absolutely perfect day…it was 23 degrees and not a breath of wind today, and that probably led to some of the lower scores as well,” he said. “But it looks like the weather forecast is going to be holding out.”

“Where Big Sky Golf Club is located, it’s in the base of the valley and doesn’t seem to be impacted by wind at all.”

The final round is scheduled for Friday and there will be a cut after Wednesday’s second round.

“Tomorrow’s a big day. Obviously, I’m following the leaderboard…I’m not going to get too bent out of shape over it just yet,” Ring said. “But I have to make it into the low 70s to be able to carry forward and play the final third and fourth rounds.”
