RCMP encourage parents to be cautious about back to school photos

Sep 2, 2023 | 12:00 PM

With children heading back to school, social media feeds are about to be flooded with pictures from proud and excited parents.

But before clicking on the publish button, Saskatchewan RCMP are encouraging parents to err on the side of caution. Staff Sgt. Steve Hurst at the Prince Albert RCMP detachment said it’s important for people to be cognizant of what they are posting and where.

“Just encouraging people to limit the personal information that is sometimes posted in those pictures,” he said.

This can include the child’s home address, grade or even the school they attend.

“At the end of the day it comes down to what a parent is comfortable sharing in that picture, but also consider some of the privacy settings they may have with their pictures and what they are posting on social media,” Hurst explained. “Just to ensure they are aware of who is able to see that picture and who is not.”

In addition to promoting online safety, the RCMP is also reminding the general public to be aware of school zones and bus loading zones; as well as how to approach a bus that has its stop arm out. Hurst added it’s also a good idea for parents to talk to their children about the safest routes to get to school if they are walking or biking.

“We want to ensure the first day of school and the entire school year is safe for the kids as they are going back and forth everyday,” he said.
