The City of Prince Albert unveiled a new park on Saturday honouring former MLA for Prince Albert Carlton Myron Kowalsky.

Kowalsky was known for more than just his work in Prince Albert as he was also a teacher and a former Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan.

Family and friends were on hand for the unveiling of the new monument where his daughters, Lisa Leis and Lara Kowalsky said that it’s a great honour to have their dad recognized by the City of Prince Albert.

“He loved P.A.,” said Lisa. “He did a lot of things and it makes us remember and think where did he get the time to do all that stuff. He’s also acknowledged for all his work so it’s really heartwarming to see.”

Myron was born in North Battleford and attended the University of Saskatchewan after high school, earning various honours. From there, he began teaching in 1961 and taught at various schools across the province before finding himself at Carlton High School in Prince Albert. He eventually found his way into politics and was first elected to the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan in 1986 and was reelected again in 1991, 1995, 1999, and 2003.

In 2001, Kowalsky was elected as Speaker of the Legislative Assembly and re-elected as Speaker in 2004. With rich Ukrainian roots and as a member of the Holy Trinity Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Prince Albert, that same year he participated as an election observer in the Presidential Election in Ukraine and helped oversee the process to keep the election fair. Last year on June 8, Myron passed away at 80 years old while at his home in Saskatoon.

“It’s a humble honour to have this dedication to my dad to acknowledge him as the great guy he was,” said Lara. “He did so much for the community, he dedicated his time and I was just thinking about how did he find all the time to do everything and he was also a really great father. He was present for us, we had lots of family time and this means the world to us.”

The city is set to unveil more parks next weekend for veterans.
