Lakeside Festival gets ready to rock to Waskesiu

Thousands of people are expected to travel to Prince Albert National Park this weekend as an annual music festival returns.

The Waskesiu Lakeside Music Festival starts Friday evening and continues through Saturday and Sunday. The event, presented by Phantom Light Distillery, marks the resort community’s biggest of the year and is free to attend. Co-organiser Jim Kerby said he’s looking forward to a great weekend.

“Thankfully the weather this weekend is looking fantastic so we think it’ll be a great opportunity for people to come and enjoy everything Waskesiu has to offer,” he said.

With the exception of 2020 and 2021 (the pandemic), the event has run every year since 2015.

In addition to live on-stage musical entertainment, there’s an Indigenous talent showcase, a children’s play area, and various food vendors. Kirby acknowledged it’s thanks to sponsors and Parks Canada they’ve kept the event free. And with all the extra traffic, the local economy also wins.

“The offerings that Waskesiu have are just wonderful so we are thrilled to get people up here,” Kerby said. “Last year we had about 4,000 people that attended”

The main stage is in the middle of the townsite near the community hall.

The 2023 edition of the festival features over 17 Saskatchewan musical groups and performers including Jay Semko, JJ Lavallee, Heidi Munro and the Real Groovy Band.
