IT'S A HEARTACHE

P.A. fan disappointed after Rod Stewart concert cancelled with no rescheduling

Thousands of Rod Stewart fans are still feeling disappointed that his concert in Saskatoon was cancelled, including a big fan from Prince Albert.

The singer behind popular hits like Forever Young and Maggie May was scheduled to perform in Saskatoon on Aug. 19 at the SaskTel Centre.

However just minutes before he was to take the stage, the event was called off which left fan Shantelle Petersen very upset.

She told paNOW that things were rocky as soon they walked through the doors as organizers were upgrading some tickets, but not all.

“We had three tickets, we went section 10, they upgraded us to seventh-row floor, which is great,” said Petersen. “Unfortunately, they only upgraded two tickets and the other ticket that they were supposed to be upgrading sent us up into section 38, which is not an upgrade.”

Once they found their seats, the opening act, rock band Cheap Trick was getting ready to perform.

Cheap Trick performed a stellar set in preparation for Rod Stewart but when the band returned to play a couple more songs, Petersen and other fans were left confused.

“I thought was a little strange, but we enjoyed it,” she said. “It was probably about 10 minutes later they decided to announce that the concert had been cancelled due to Rod Stewart blowing his vocal cords during warmups.”

At first, Petersen said, many people didn’t believe the announcement and stayed in their seats until the announcement was repeated.

What followed was a series of disappointing sighs and even boos from the crowd. Many of those in attendance were there in September of last year when Stewart was supposed to perform. That concert was also cancelled due to production issues.

Petersen said many fans even returned merchandise like T-shirts purchased before the show because they felt they were irrelevant if they couldn’t see the star perform.

She added she met people that came from as far as Alaska to see Stewart perform, only to leave in frustration.

Last year, Stewart postponed several Canadian shows due to production delays, including the Saskatoon performance from last February.

The singer also had to cancel a show in Geelong, Australia in March just hours before the start due to a viral infection.

While there was a sliver of hope that the show would be rescheduled, the tour announced that wouldn’t be the case and offered refunds to all ticket-goers.

That, however, isn’t enough for Petersen who isn’t sure if she’ll get the chance to see Rod Stewart perform.

“He’s getting older. This might have been our last chance to get to see him.”
