Indigenous culture event being held at P.A.’s Exhibition Centre

Aug 22, 2023 | 11:00 AM

People in the Prince Albert area will have the chance to learn more about Indigenous culture.

The Northern Prairie Indigenous Peoples Collective is holding its Summer Solstice celebration at the P.A. Exhibition Centre on Wednesday.

The non-profit was unable to hold the event in June, when the Summer Solstice actually happened, due to a lack of resources. However, the group thought it was too important to pass on.

“Many of our children do not understand or recognize their own culture so we looked at holding this cultural day filled with exciting recreational and cultural activities to support our families,” said Janice Henry, president of the Northern Prairie Indigenous Peoples Collective.

This includes teepee raising, Elder storytelling, First Nation drum teachings, Métis jigging classes, and more.

They were able to hold the event after getting funds from the Northern Lights Community Development Corporation and the Association of Métis, Non and Status Indians Saskatchewan (AMNSIS). The Northern Prairie Indigenous Peoples Collective is a charter member of AMNSIS.

Because of this, the entire event is free.

“We’re ending with a feast, a hot meal along with bannock, burgers, roast beef, and the whole nine yards,” added Henry.

It gets underway on Wednesday at 10 a.m. and goes until 8 p.m.
