Woman taken to hospital following assault in James Smith Cree Nation

One woman was taken to hospital with serious but not life-threatening injuries after an assault on the James Smith Cree Nation Wednesday night

The incident was reported to Melfort RCMP just before 11 p.m. and police started patrolling the community and surrounding area.

Following a tip, the Prince Albert RCMP found the suspect driving west of Muskoday First Nation heading toward the city on Highway 3.

Once in custody, the man was taken briefly to the hospital for treatment of a minor injury but cleared to be released and then transported to jail.

The 35-year-old suspect appeared via phone in Nipawin court on charges of assault and failing to comply with an appearance notice.
