West Hill to get second chance to weigh in on subdivision

A modified plan for development of the yard site of the former Angus Merasty School has been given to city council and will now go to the residents of West Hill for feedback.

In a somewhat tense discussion, Coun. Terra Lennox-Zepp had questions about the new plan.

“It is completely inadequate for green space,” she said, then referenced a public meeting from 2019. “The public was very intent on green space and they wanted playground equipment.”

Lennox-Zepp also pointed out that neighbourhood has limited green space and has been using the empty space as a substitute park.

Following some debate, Mayor Greg Dionne ended the discussion by saying the residents would be able to give their opinion on whether the proposal submitted by Miller Contracting has enough green area or not.

No date has yet been decided for the meeting but it will be this fall and could be followed up with more meetings if needed.

What to do with the three acre parcel of land has been a topic of debate since 2019, when the city acquired it in a land exchange with the Prince Albert Grand Council.

Some comments have suggested the entire site should be kept as green space, but that has not met with success any time it has come before council over the last four years.

One suggestion was that the developer be required to install play structures as part of the agreement.
