City of P.A. adds four school zones

Drivers will be asked to slow down in more locations once school starts after a Prince Albert City Council decision to create four more school zones.

Some of the schools, like Queen Mary, have heavy gravel truck traffic going past, explained Mayor Greg Dionne.

“We probably have four or five of our developers and gravel companies that own out there so during this season, there’s heavy gravel trucks. That was an obvious one,” said Dionne.

In addition to the Queen Mary school zone that will be on 15th Street West, one will be added on 6th Avenue West going past École St. Anne’s School, another past Princess Margaret School on 4th Street East and the fourth on River Street East where it passes Riverside School.

This is not the final word when it comes to adding school zones as councillors were discussing École Holy Cross as well and noted that traffic backs up considerably at the intersection of Muzzy Drive and 15 Avenue East.

Consideration will also be given to extending the hours of school zones from the current 5:00 pm to 7:00 or 8:00 pm.

Council passed the changes at its Aug. 8 meeting after consulting with police and the school boards on what would work best.

While bylaws are effective as soon as they are passed, drivers must slow down as soon as the signs are erected.
