As part of the on-going monitoring of Kingsmere Lake, Prince Albert National Park (PANP) is conducting a creel (angler) survey this summer.

Feedback will be used to inform monitoring of fish populations, including lake trout, and support decision making to support fish populations. Tom Perry, ecologist team lead with PANP, noted the survey work started during Victoria Day long weekend and the feedback thus far has been great.

“Folks have been really positive about fishing and fish populations at the park and we’ve completed nearly 100 surveys so far,” he said.

Anglers using Kingsmere Lake are encouraged to talk with the creel surveyors at the end of their day on the water and help maintain the aquatic ecosystem in the lake. Perry noted staff will be out periodically throughout the week, up until Labour Day weekend.

“We just gonna encourage folks if they see park staff on Kingsmere lake, or at the boat launch near Kingsmere Lake, to stop by and have a visit and provide information about their angling experience,” Perry said.

Parks Canada takes its mandate to protect ecological integrity very seriously and is among the few national parks systems in the world that have a system-wide ecological integrity monitoring and reporting program, consisting of more than 700 scientific measures that inform park specific priorities and guide restoration action.
