Harvest continuing in drought areas across Saskatchewan, overall crops and pastures still struggling

Combines are starting to become a more common site in drought-stricken areas across Saskatchewan.

That’s according to the province’s crop report for July 25 to July 31 which mentions this is mostly happening in west-central and southwest regions.

Those who haven’t started will most likely soon as the hot and dry conditions continue, and the crops ripen.

The majority of most crops are considered to be in fair condition, as of July 24. This includes winter wheat (51 per cent), spring wheat (41 per cent), canola (42 per cent), and lentils (39 per cent).

Despite this, some crops are seeing high percentages in poor to very poor conditions. Mustard has reportedly been hit the hardest as 58 per cent of the crop falls under this category. Durum is the only other crop where the majority is in poor condition (51 per cent).

The lack of precipitation has also had a major impact on pastures. The report noted five per cent are in good shape, while 42 per cent are considered poor and 25 per cent very poor.

Along with drought conditions, the heat, grasshoppers, and gophers have all taken their toll on some crops this past week.
